Objective(s): The aims of this research are to understand smoke properties, smoke transport, and the effect of smoke emissions on the artic environment, including impacts on sea ice, snow cover, and feedback to climate change.
Project Description: The research aims to characterize the physical and chemical properties of forest fire smoke and its impact on the Artic. Three aircraft (CT-133 jet, Dehavilland Sea Heron and Dehavilland Twin Otter) based out of Yellowknife, equipped with standard scientific atmospheric chemistry sampling instrumentation, will be used to sample smoke while airborne. Sampling will take place opportunistically as fires occur across the Northwest Territories, likely from mid-June through July, 2007. Close cooperation will be established with fire management agencies, particularly the N.W.T. Fire Management Agency, during sampling. The research team will also meet with local authorities before and after the field program to explain the research and findings. The findings of the research will be shared with other interested parties through the Aurora Research Institute. No on-the-ground sampling will take place during the course of the field program. Aircraft sampling of forest fire smoke across the Northwest Territories will take place from June 1 to August 31, 2007.
