Project Description: The proposed project consists of two parts: interviews with elders and knowledgeable hunters about leaders of caribou and their role in directing the movements of the herd, and the completion of a questionnaire by hunters aimed at determining their evaluation of the current Dempster Highway hunting policies of the Yukon and Northwest Territories. Six to ten individuals will be interviewed on this topic in each of three Porcupine Caribou Herd-user communities – Dawson, Old Crow, and Fort McPherson. Interviews will be conducted with a hired local research associate. All those interviewed will receive an honorarium for their contributions.
