Project Description: PFOA is a synthetic compound documented as being widely dispersed in the environment, including in biota of high-northern latitudes. The route of this dispersal is not entirely clear. PFOA concentrations in soil samples from several locations around the world will be analyzed to determine environmental reservoirs and global distribution. Two new 250-ml HDPE sample bottles will be shipped to Aurora Research Institute, one of which will be filled with clean quartz sand, and a new stainless-steel hand spade. Ideally, the sampler would choose a rural location, remote from obvious sources of contamination, and having soil not recently manipulated by man. The plan is to have a local scientist collect the sample off of Navy Road, within Inuvik municipal boundaries. At the sample location, the sampler will pour the sand onto the new spade and return the sand to the same sample bottle to serve as the field blank. The sampler then would clear leaf litter from the soil surface and use the spade to scoop soil into the remaining bottle from 0 to about 10cm depth. Then the bottles would be sealed into a mailing box and sent back to researchers. Results will be shared with interested parties through the Aurora Research Institute. Soil sampling will be carried out in June, 2006 by Dr. Sharon Katz (Aurora Research Institute)in an area within town limits (off of Navy Road,Inuvik).
