Project Description: This project aims to address a local concern about the release of contaminants resulting from an enduring fire at the Inuvik dumpsite by complementing the monitoring of Inuvik’s dumpsite for non-standard contaminants, and by reaffirming the drainage pathways from the dumpsite. Water samples (40-80 l) will be collected from two streams that clear the melt water from the dumpsite area, and the two lakes they flow into. The water will be collected in stainless steel Coke cans, pre-washed with hexane. The samples will be taken in triplicates. The organic pollutants will be retained on XAD columns, and sent for analysis to Freshwater Institute (FWI) in Winnipeg. Tests will be carried out for the presence of the following pollutants, which may be volatilized by the dumpsite fire: Brominated flame retardants, fluorinated organic compounds, polychlorinated naphthalenes, and polychlorinated biphenyls. The primary deliverable will be a report on the concentration of the chemicals described herein in the waterways surrounding the Inuvik dumpsite. The results of this report will be communicated through a presentation in Inuvik. Copies of the report will be deposited at the Aurora Research Institute and at the Town of Inuvik office. The study will be conducted within the municipal bounds of Inuvik from May 20 to August 25, 2006.
