Project Description: The objective of this Master’s-level study is to evaluate community health in the Inuvialuit Settlement Region in the context of planning initiatives. Health and well-being can be linked to both environmental and socio-economic factors as well as physiological factors. Therefore, examining variations in services and facilities between communities and any correlated differences in health outcomes may contribute to planning relevant interventions to improve community health and well-being. The communities of Inuvik, Aklavik, Holman, Sachs Harbour and Tuktoyaktuk will be visited as part of this study. Relevant health determinant indexes will be applied to develop a broad understanding of health in the communities through information obtained from Statistics Canada and Health Canada. This information will then be correlated with information gathered through informal interviews with health and social service providers on community infrastructure and resources related to health. Approximately five to ten individuals, ranging in age from twenty-five to fifty, will be interviewed in each community. Research participants will not be required to share personal opinions in interviews; rather, they will be asked for factual information on health service availability. Written consent will be obtained from all research participants before interviews are conducted. The findings of this study will be shared with the five participating communities and the Aurora Research Institute. The study will be conducted within the municipal bounds of Inuvik, Aklavik, Holman, Sachs Harbour and Tuktoyaktuk from May 25 to August 21, 2006.
