Project Description: The objective of the study is to: determine the spatial extent of sediments enriched by tailings solids; characterize the physical and geochemical characteristics of contaminated sediments in Baker Creek; determine to what extent arsenic and other elements of concern in these materials can be remobilized into the water column. Given the shallow water depth in Baker Creek, the majority of sediment cores will be collected by hand. In areas with greater than 1 m depth of water a canoe Slide-Hammer Sediment Corer will be used. Peepers will be installed by hand throughout the Baker Creek Watershed at the same location as the sediment core samples to collect porewater samples. Sediment data will be collected approximately from 60 locations. The Giant Mine Project website and the Giant Mine Community Alliance will be used to communicate results. Other communications efforts include ongoing public information sessions, technical workshops, a display in a Yellowknife shopping mall, educational materials and an extensive public reference library. Information generated from the investigation will be available to the public through the Giant Mine Remediation Project. Investigators require a high level of education and training, therefore the opportunities for local involvement are limited. The study will be conducted at Baker Creek, Giant Mine, Yellowknife, NT
