Project Description: A field dye tracer study will be conducted to examine the mixing and dispersion characteristics of discharges from Imperial Oil, Norman Wells, to the Mackenzie River. This will be accomplished by injecting dye at the water release point under normal discharge conditions and measuring dye concentration at several river transects downstream of the discharge. The concentration profile at these transects will then be used to determine the dispersion of dissolved chemicals in the river. A final AEM report will be submitted to the SLWB in 2006. Annual Community awareness Meetings are held in several communities For this year, the only possible opportunities for local involvement would be in the form of an environmental monitor, or summer student interested in environmental-related fields. Boat captains operating Imperial vessels are hired through the Ernie McDonald Land Corporation. Location of research: Mackenzie River in the vicinity of Norman Wells. Specifically the Imperial Oil Central Processing Facility backwash pond discharge pipeline and lease impounding area channel; the Refinery water flood and impounding basin discharge piping; and the Battery 3 impounding area discharge piping. The map with the licence application illustrates the sampling areas from 2004. Those in green will be close to the proposed sampling locations. This work will be conducted out of Norman Wells.
