Project Description: The objective of this project is to investigate the geologic character of lake sediments in the deep sections of Great Slave Lake using geophysical survey techniques. This project plans on surveying with a Geopulse sub-bottom profiler. This system is mounted on a catamaran sled, which is towed by a small boat. A boomer plate transmits acoustic signals at regular intervals while a string of hydrophones record sound returns. Sub-bottom profiling will enable the investigators to evaluate the geological character of lake sediments deposited during the last ice age when the Laurentide Ice Sheet covered North America. Results arising from this project can be transmitted by setting up a website with information relevant for communities close to the research area. Direct interaction with local communities will be arranged according to interest. The principal investigator of this project will prepare a glaciological information package aimed for use within the community. The study will be conducted at the deep basins of the Great Slave Lake. The most prominent basins are located in Christie Bay and McLeod Bay in the far end of the Northeast Arm of the lake. The deep sector of Christie Bay, which is the main area of scientific interest, is located about 30 km northwest of Lutsel K'e. The research will be conducted from July 22 to August 2, 2005.
