Project Description: The objectives of this study are 1) to gather and analyze views and opinions of the Mackenzie Gas Project (MGP) and its possible impacts on the culture, socio-economics and environment from Gwich’in beneficiaries living in Aklavik, Inuvik, Fort McPherson and Tsiigehtchic, and 2) to distribute this information back to communities. The field work will be conducted by Raila Salokangas (the researcher) and a research assistant based at the Gwich’in Renewable Resource Board, Inuvik, during the summer of 2005. Research methodology will involve a survey - interviews will be done using a questionnaire, and semi-directed questions. All the survey participants will remain anonymous. The survey will be conducted in Aklavik, Inuvik, Fort McPherson and Tsiigehtchic. A community assistant will be hired in each community to introduce the researchers and help with the interviews. The interviewers will go from door to door and ask to talk to possible interviewees. Participants will sign a consent form. Any participants under the age of 19 will need parental consent. The communities of Aklavik, Inuvik, Fort McPherson, Tsiigehtchic and agencies involved in the research will be provided with copies of the research in August 2005. To insure that the public has access to the research a copy of the research results will be given to the Aurora Research Institute Library in Inuvik. Presentations of the results may also be held in the communities if the communities wish to do so. There is also a possibility that the final report will be published online. This study will be conducted in Inuvik, Aklavik, Fort McPherson, and Tsiigehtchic from May through August, 2005.
