Objective(s): In May 2004, the Yukon Government, Department of Environment, in partnership with Parks Canada and the Aklavik Hunters and Trappers Committee, initiated a six-year grizzly bear research project on the Yukon North Slope. This traditional/local knowledge study will allow harvesters and community residents to contribute important information about bear activities, numbers, and distribution. The researchers will work with the Aklavik Hunters and Trappers Committee and local harvesters, as well as gathering information from interviews done in 1998/99 and from observational records. The main objectives are to 1) identify community concerns and questions about the grizzly bear population, 2) review current information and assess information needs and availability, 3) receive direction from the community on the use of local and traditional knowledge, and 4) develop a three-year workplan in consultation with the HTC and local harvesters.
