Objective(s): The purpose of this research is to examine changes in population dynamics of green alder on a range of sites in tundra and forest tundra ecosystems throughout the lower Mackenzie. By conducting a retrospective analysis of growth and demography, the researchers will explore the hypothesis that green alder populations have responded to climate change through altered growth and demography. Since there is some evidence that alder may have different life history strategies at different latitudes and on different sites, the researchers will compare the relative importance of reproductive strategies at these sites. By sampling within a number of site types (recent burns, floodplain and un-burned upland), the researchers will also explore the notion that increased disturbance will facilitate green alder population expansion.
