Objective(s): In the last 20 years, a number of new mineral deposits and showings have been found in the western Northwest Territories, including the 1997 discovery of emeralds near the Lened pluton. The purpose of this project is to develop and compile an inventory, and improve the understanding of this and other mineral deposits related to the granite intrusions in the area. Understanding the concentrations of metals in the environment is important for the purposes of providing baseline environmental data and improving exploration guidelines for commodities in the Northwest Territories. A team of six researchers will be in the Tungsten area producing detailed geological maps and collecting samples for laboratory analysis (whole-rock chemistry, electron probe microanalysis, and x-ray techniques). The goal is to determine the source of the tungsten (which may be from the nearby pluton or may have traveled along fault zones from some distal and as yet unidentified source), gold, vanadium, and chromium. They will also study other small showings, the regional structure and stream sediment geochemistry as well as water chemistry to determine whether these can aid in finding mineralized areas and to give a better assessment of the baseline impacts of these deposits. The final product will be a report.
