Objective(s): The Nahanni aster is a small plant endemic to the Northwest Territories, that is, this plant is not found anywhere else in the world. In fact, there are only three known locations for this species, all are active or previously active hotspring sites, and all are within Nahanni National Park Reserve. The classification of asters has undergone a number of changes recently; new plant collections are required to clarify the relationship of the Nahanni aster to other species in the genus Symphyotrichum. This study aims to clarify the relationship of the Nahanni aster to other related species, determine the size of the population at the known sites, and investigate other potential occurrence sites. The information gathered is intended to be used for preparation of a status report for the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC), and thereby determine whether the species meets criteria for listing by COSEWIC.
