Objectif(s): Culturally, northern peoples have long used driftwood found along northern flowing rivers and on the shores of Arctic Islands. Currently the Gwich'in are developing a forest management plan and driftwood is one of the forest products that is of interest because of rapid community growth as well as house piling support requirements. The expanding petroleum industry will require large quantities of blocks for temporary support of supplies and equipment and for wood chips used in pipeline insulation. The general objective of this work is to examine driftwood flow past northern communities in terms of an alternate timber supply for possible commercial use in the Gwich'in Settlement Area. This study should provide baseline information for future community wood resource decisions recognizing the importance of driftwood.
