Objective(s): This year's research will: (1) assess sulfate-reducing bacterial diversity and mercury transformations; and (2) analyze the toxicity of contaminants deposited on vegetation and soil to wildlife that may digest it. Little is known about transformations of mercury and sulfate-reducing bacteria in northern areas yet they are important in northern systems. Similarly, little is known about the toxicity of contaminants deposited from soil and atmosphere onto plants to the animals that ingest arctic plants in their diet.
