Objective(s): The Kennady Lake or Gahcho Kue Project is an advanced mineral exploration property operated by DeBeers Canada Exploration Inc. To assist with current environmental management of the property and to prepare for an assessment of environmental effects of potential future development at the site, it is necessary to collect baseline environmental information. Sediment traps, which have been in place through the winter, will be removed from Kennady Lake and measurements of sediments collected will allow calculation of sediment accumulation rate. Water quality sampling and analysis will be undertaken to collect baseline data on nutrient levels, suspended sediments, trace metals, and oxygen consuming substances. A limnological survey will be undertaken of a number of smaller bodies of water that could potentially be affected by project development activities. Water samples will be collected and analyzed for nutrients, trace metals and major ions. Minnow traps will be used to determine presence/absence of small fish; fish will be identified (where practical), counted and released. Zooplankton samples will also be collected from both Kennady Lake and the smaller bodies of water, and will be counted and identified to species where practical.
