Objective(s): The study will attempt to reconstruct the past 10,000 year geomorphological and hydrological history of the Mackenzie River using sedimentological records of fluvial deposits. The objectives are: 1) to pinpoint the "exact age" of the Mackenzie River (date of breaching of the Rampart Limestone Barrier near Fort Good Hope and the consequent draining of Paleao Glacial Lake Mackenzie); 2) to investigate the long-term behaviour of the Mackenzie River (aggradation, degradation, stability, lateral accretion, etc) using geophysical methods (ground penetrating radar (GPR) and electro-resistivity (ERGI); 3) to reconstruct past hydrological history (ice jam frequency) of the river by interpreting sedimentological records of floodplain. The proposed study will provide a better understanding of the Mackenzie River past and present behaviour.
