Objective(s): The overall objective of this project is to collect and document the experiences of indigenous northern peoples related to Climate Change and to present these in a manner that will be effectively heard by the peoples and decision makers of the South. These experiences and observations will be collected from across the Circumpolar North and stored in a project book and dedicated web-site. This is an education-oriented project, with the intended audience of this project primarily the decision makers, organizations, and the general public of the south. A key component of the Canadian portion of this project will be the six-month placement of a Finnish exchange student at the Aurora Research Institute. From April to August 2002, Aurora Research Institute staff will work together with this student to summarize collected data and verify this data with community groups. Most summaries will be based on previously collected data to minimize work and avoid duplication of effort. Some interviews will be done to collect data and verify existing information. Local elders will be hired to assist with community visits and translation.
Project Description: In order to be certain that participating communities are clear as to the use and content of contributed material to be used in the project book and web-site, project staff will verify summarized data with all participating communities. A local elder will be hired to assist with travel to communities (planning, logistics, translation and accompaniment where possible). Community visits will be timed to coincide with pre-planned community meetings (i.e. band council, renewable resource council) as much as possible. Written and verbal reports on prepared summaries will be presented to the community members who have participated in the preparation of the original document, and to the community as whole where possible. All comments and suggestions for change will be taken into account by project staff. All information will be kept confidential-no names will be used in the reports or on the web site. Informants will provide informed written consent for participation in the project.
