Alteration Study of the Giant Mine, Yellowknife
Principal Investigator: Hubbard, Laura (1)
Licence Number: 13212
Organization: Simon Fraser University
Licensed Year(s): 2001
Issued: Jul 17, 2001
Project Team: Dr. Dan Marshall

Objective(s): The objective of the research team is to determine and characterize alteration closely associated with gold mineralization in the Giant Mines. Information collected will be used to identify probable gold bearing fluid sources, and will help develop a mineralization framework for future gold exploration in the Yellowknife area and related Archean greenstone belts. This proposal is a continuation of a project initiated by two previous workers, and will be a component of an M.Sc. degree at Simon Fraser University for the researcher.

Project Description: The research team will be based out of Yellowknife, and travel to the Giant Mine site by motor vehicle. Detailed geological mapping will occur to enable the research team to understand the alteration and associated mineralization within the mine camp. Sampling of various rock types (ore, mineralized and un-mineralized) will be conducted with a hammer, with specimens collected ranging from 10-20 cubic centimeters (fist sized chunks). Samples collected will be returned to laboratory facilities for detailed analysis.
