Objective(s): The objective of the proposed study is to collect baseline information about species composition within shoal habitat in Prelude Lake, and to complement previous work which assessed lake trout spawning habitat. The ultimate goal of the "Fisheries Recovery Strategy" proposal is to restore fish populations in Prelude Lake to historical levels. The strategy is composed of four components (habitat restoration/enhancement, fisheries enhancement, fisheries management plan and public involvement and education).
Project Description: The research team will be based in Yellowknife, and transported to Prelude Lake by truck. Transport on the lake will be by 20' Alaskan boat equipped with a 55 hp motor (supplied by the North Slave Metis Alliance). Baseline information will be collected on the composition of a number of target species: Lake Trout, White Fish, Cisco, Burbot, Northern Pike and forage species. Both 30 m beach seines and minnow traps will be used to collect information on species composition and numbers.
