Objective(s): The purpose of the survey is to improve public knowledge and understanding of the geology of this area, as no publically available magnetic coverage exists. Survey lines will be flown at a spacing of 800 m and a 200 m mean terrain clearance (where posssible, given safety considerations due to rugged terrain), to record the variation in the earth's magnetic field caused by magnetic minerals contained in the rocks of the earth's crust, as part of a program of Regional aeromagnetic mapping that has been carried out by the Geological Survey of Canada since the 1940's. The designated airborne geophysical survey company will acquire the data, under contract to the GSC, which will be responsible for preparation of the survey contract, monitoring of the survey operation and public distribution of the data through the GSC Geophysical Data Centre. The data will be published at completion of the project and will be made available for current scientific research projects.
Project Description: An Airborne Aeromagnetic Survey will be carried out to improve public knowledge and understanding of the geology of the Colville Lake area, where no publically available magnetic coverage exists. Aircraft equipped with state of the art magnetometer and navigation systems including global positioning systems (GPS) will fly lines at a spacing of 800 m and a 200 m mean terrain clearance (where posssible, given safety considerations due to rugged terrain), to record the variation in the earth's magnetic field caused by magnetic minerals contained in the rocks of the earth's crust. Aircraft will operate from existing runways and re-fuel at airports located either in Norman Wells or Colville Lake.
