Objective(s): To conduct a lake and fish habitat survey, to identify which water bodies within the study area have the following characteristics: overwintering fish, lake depths greater than 3.5 feet (suitable for overwintering fish) and water quality conditions not suitable for overwintering fish. Data collected will be used to exclude lakes inhabited, or potentially inhabited, from a winter seismic program which will utilize Vibra-Ram technology. This knowledge of lake status will save money during seismic operations, and enhance the level of environmental protection.
Project Description: The research team will conduct a lake and fish habitat survey, to identify which water bodies have the following characteristics: overwintering fish, lake depths greater than 3.5 feet and water quality conditions which are not suitable for overwintering fish. The research team will consist of 3 crews, 4 men/crew. Crews will receive their safety and sampling orientation in Tuktoyaktuk Harbour at Gruben's Camp. During the field survey, the crews will fly into, and out of, Tuktoyaktuk Harbour by helicopter each day. Movement between lakes will be by inflatable boats, which will be left on the tundra each night. Data collected will be used to exclude lakes inhabited, or potentially inhabited, from a winter seismic program (which will utilize Vibra-Ram technology). This knowledge of lake status will save money during seismic operations, and enhance the level of environmental protection.
