Objective(s): This research involves how groups of marine invertebrate fossils, crinoids evolved over a 6 million year interval designated as the Frasnian Stage. A total of 14 crinoid species, representing 7 genera, have been described from the Late Devonian (Frasnian) period in the Northwest Territories. The primary goal will be to discover the exact distribution of previously described NWT Devonian crinoid species and find evidence of additional crinoids related to species discovered in other parts of the world.
Project Description: This research involves how groups of marine invertebrate fossils, crinoids evolved over a 6 million year interval designated as the Frasnian Stage. The researcher will study the rock exposures along the Mackenzie Highway between Hay River/Enterprise and Fort Simpson. The fossils to be collected rarely exceed 3 cm and collecting will be restricted to weathered surfaces composed of loose material. Sample locations will be recorded using a Global Positioning System device.
