Objective(s): The primary purpose of this project is to describe the role of an adult educator working in a cross-cultural setting. In the process I will be exploring and drawing from both my experience as an adult educator in the Northwest Territories and the formal learning experiences that comprised a year of intensive graduate study at the University of Saskatchewan. The project meets the need for a professional discourse on what it means to be an adult educator at the Aurora Campus, Inuvik, a) which is a branch of Aurora College in the NWT, and b) to share this understanding with other adult educators, college personnel, and members of the communities. The project will provide an understanding of cross-cultural education of interest to other adult educators, and college personnel in that region.
Project Description: I will mainly reflect on any experiences and review secondary sources. I will collect data through an exploration of my own practice as an educator and through an investigation of significant themes previously identified in the literature studied in the area of cross-cultural and adult education. The following themes will be considered farther for their relevance in organizing the investigation: Decolonization of Aboriginal Education; Adult Learning Theory & Practices; Circumpolar Studies & Aboriginal Pedagogy; First Nations Cross Cultural Education; Career Counseling Theories & Practices; Land claims, Treaties and the Indian Act. The project will document a reflexive, integrative approach to learning in a graduate education environment. It draws attention to the purpose and place of cross-cultural practices in constructing meaning and the need to respect and understand the process of emerging knowledge. The project meets requirements for my Master's of Education Degree. The researcher is willing to share the findings with the general public, community groups and educational organizations is so desired.
