Objective(s): The purpose of the baseline survey is to collect information on prenatal risk factors and pregnancy outcomes in communities that do not have a Canada Prenatal Nutrition Program (CPNP) project or similar prenatal nutrition type project. The information gathered in the Baseline Data Study will act as a baseline for comparison when evaluating the ability of CPNP projects to improve the health of pregnant women and babies. The study will also determine rates of healthy vs unhealthy pregnancy outcomes among women who are eligible for CPNP-type programs but have not had access to such programs. Information will also be collected on how rates of healthy vs unhealthy pregnancy outcomes vary among at-risk women eligible for CPNP programs as a function of prenatal risk.
Project Description: Information will be gathered by conducting postnatal interviews with women in communities without a Canada Prenatal Nutrition Program (CPNP) or or similar prenatal nutrition program. Interviews will be done by a trained interviewer, hired from the community under contract with Health Canada. The interviewer hired will have a health background where possible. The interviews will be done face to face using the CPNP baseline data study questionnaire. The questions will be about the woman's recent delivery, her new baby, her pregnancy, and herself. Community interviewers will be asked to collect information for a period of 1.5 years. The questionnaires are completely anonymous and all information collected is kept strictly confidential. Each questionnaire is given a code number. One and one half years of data will be collected. Interviews will be done with women who have given birth in the 6 month period before the start date, as well as with all women who give birth during the one-year period. Questionnaires are sent to Ottawa for data entry and a report will be generated using the results from across Canada. The final report will be available to communities participating in the study.
