Objective(s): The Aquatics Effects Technology Evaluation (AETE) Program was established to review appropriate technologies (ie., methods) for assessing impacts of mine effluents on the aquatic environment. EVS is part of a team of consulting groups conducting this review across Canada for Public Works and Government Services Canada, Hull, Quebec. The Lupin study site is one of seven across Canada being studied to review various methodologies. The result of this Program are expected to be applicable to programs including environmental effects monitoring (EEM), impact assessment, and baseline monitoring. The AETE Program has three main areas of study: toxicity, receiving water biology and water and sediment monitoring. The overall goal of the AETE field program is to conduct field evaluation and comparison of selected aquatic environmental effects monitoring technologies used in the assessment of the impacts of mining.

Project Description: The Lupin study site is one of seven mine sites being investigated across Canada. Receiving water samples will be collected for chemistry (total and dissolved metals) and toxicity testing. To ensure that a well-defined chemical gradient exists water and sediment will be collected from reference and exposure stations at the study site. Sediment samples will be collected for chemistry (total organic carbon, particle size, loss on ignition, metals) and possibly toxicity testing. Benthic invertebrate and fish communities will also be characterized.
