Objective(s): To disseminate preliminary findings of thesis research conducted with women working in the oilsand industry (Fort McMurray, Alberta, June - August, 1995). To explore/identify similarities and differences in barriers/opportunities for women's access to non-traditional work in the NWT. To identify opportunities to provide support/resources to women working in or wishing to access employment in resource industry. This information is important in terms of social equity, women's access to skilled/meaningful/well paid employment, promoting health, vibrant communities in the North, labour force development, meeting industry labour force needs, and promoting diversity in the workforce.
Project Description: Because the main objective of visiting the NWT is the dissemination of research results and verification of findings with a similar community, sampling will be done on a convenience basis, using lead contacts, networking. Interviews with women, who may be participants and non participants in resource industry, trainers/educators, employers, labour force development staff, and/or advocacy organizers, will be done using a triangulation methodology and feminist research techniques and principles.
