Objective(s): The Slave Province (SP) is generally characterized by a shallow level of erosion and therefore, the deeper parts of the Slave Crust are rarely exposed and can, in the most part, only be studied indirectly. However, reconnaissance mapping has highlighted the presence of an extensive high grade (deep crustal) terrain in the MacNaughton Lake area. The objective of this project is to explore fully the relationship between the high grade metamorphism and granitoid rocks. Examination of this problem will contribute towards a better understanding of the formation of the lower crust within the Slave Province.
Project Description: Examination of the temporal and genetic relationship between metamorphism and granitoid magmatism will be achieved through detailed mapping of granite-metasediment contacts to examine the thermal effects of granite intrusion. This will rely on a detailed documentation of the mineral assemblages, textures, metamorphic grade, and relative timing of the meta-sedimentary and meta-igneous rocks in the MacNaughton Lakes area. Isotope U-PB studies of granite and metasediment minerals will be used to constrain the absolute timing of the intrusions and metamorphism. Rock samples for this work will be collected using a hammer.
