Objective(s): To gain a general overview of tourism in the Inuvialuit Settlement Region as well as some first hand impressions related to the following issues: general characteristics of tourism in the region (package tours versus independent travellers; consumptive versus non consumptive tourism; touring, adventure, hunting and fishing; growth and concern of ecotourism (resource-based concerns, community concerns); problems of "community-based tourism"; progress in industry; and issues arising from cultural tourism.

Project Description: The researcher will administer a questionnaire to visitors in the campground, in hotels and on tours; interview federal and territorial government officials, members of the Joint Secretariat and Renewable Resource Committees; and individuals active in the tourism industry. The researcher will also sample one or two day trips out of Inuvik (as a "participant observer"), and visit Tuktoyaktuk to look at tourism concerns and plans there.
