Objective(s): To elucidate the timing and processes involved in the development of permafrost peatlands in continental northwestern Canada through the record of past vegetative conditions. Results from the peat cores could aid in evaluating the environmental effects that predicted climate change will have on these ecosystems.

Project Description: The researchers will take and analyse duplicate peat cores collected at each of their sites. A modified Macaulay peat corer (inside diameter 5 cm) for the non frozen peat and a small diameter permafrost probe for the perennially frozen peat will be used. Analysis of the peat cores for macrofossils stratigraphy, vegitation stratigraphy and peat chemistry will be completed.
