Objective(s): To explore the alternatives to incarceration being implemented by the Northwest Territories and Aboriginal communities. As a follow-up to the Royal Commission and various justice inquiries, the issue of healing programs designed for abused women who are jailed for crimes against the person will be examined. Speaking with incarcerated women directly, the mission is to understand and address their needs to heal. The question of sentencing circles and healing centres will be explored as options to the present justice system.

Project Description: The researcher, as part of a wider study on healing, will use a participatory research method to gain insight into the issue of incarcerated women in the NWT. Interviews will take place with women presently incarcerated in the North as well as with those directly involved (healers, correctional officers, government and interest groups).
