Objective(s): To determine annual productivity of Snow Geese on Banks Island for simultaneous comparison to Wrangel Island; to determine mortality rates of adults and yound snow geese and cause-specific mortality of birds wintering in California; to estimate distribution and movement patterns amongs wintering and breeding populations and identify proximate cause(s) for these movements; to determine the importance of the Banks Island population as a reservoir of avian chlorea in the Pacific and Central Flyway.

Project Description: The researchers will capture and band moulting Lesser Snow Geese in the Egg and Big River valleys on Banks Island. Flightless geese will be herded into large holding pens. Each bird will be measured, weighed and banded. A sample of birds will be swabbed and bled to determine the presence of avian cholera. These birds will be fitted with radio collars. Various methods of productivity will be recorded. Marked individuals will be followed during fall and winter.
