Objective(s): To collect Permain age (about 250 million years old) fossil plants; to identify the plants that were growing in this region; to reconstruct the paleoenviornment, paleovegetation, and paleoclimate based on the floral assemblage; to compare the Axel Heiberg and Ellesmere Island floras with Permian floras from Russia, Europe and Greenland; and to understand the relationship between the geological evolution and climate/vegetation change of the Circumpolar Arctic during Permian time.
Project Description: The researcher will begin a preliminary paleontological investigation of Permain age (about 250 million years old) sediments of the Sabine Bay Formation and the fossil plants contained within these deposits. The plants recovered will be identified and compared to Permain floras from Russia, Greenland, and Europe. Localities yielding interesting or well-preserved specimens will provide a basis for future study. J. Gardner will be looking for vertebrate remains.
