Objective(s): To determine the effect of climate change on the Mackenzie Valley environment by carrying out long-term soil temperature monitoring on bench mark soils and by determining the soil and air temperature changes resulting from climate change; and to provide soil temperature and related data for the current ecoclimatic and permafrost zones and to identify improvements or changes to the zoning, land potential (ie, growing conditions) and land sensitivity (ie, erosion, thaw or heave sensitivity, slope stability).

Project Description: Soil (at seven depths) and air temperature data are recorded by data loggers. These loggers are programmed to collect data every 3 hours on the hour. The sites are visited twice a year to reprogram the loggers. In addition, active layer depth and subsidence are also recorded during the fall visit. Researchers will collect this data in order to determine the effect of climate change on the environment and to provide soil temperature and other data.
