Objective(s): To gather data on the languages used by various categories of Iqaluit and Lake Harbour residents in different speech circumstances; to elicit through interviews, the cultural meaning and the social weight given to the use of this or that particular language in this or that type of speech circumstance; and to describe the Inuktituk dialect(s) used by the Iqaluit residents.

Project Description: The research aims at understanding which language(s) are spoken by the Iqaluit and Lake Harbour residents in different circumstances of life: at school, at work, within their family, at the store, etc. The researchers also seek to understand how the use of a particular language when speaking to a particular person reflects cultural viewpoint. Also the researchers seek to understand how school children use their first and second language(s).
