Objective(s): To document the prevalence of chronic obstructive lung disease in residents of Deline (Fort Franklin); to quantify specific indicators of lung health in the community, including the frequency of respiratory tract infections, radiographic and spirometric abnormalities, and respiratory symptoms; to document the prevalence of risk factors for lung disease, including smoking (active and passive), housing, exposure to wood smoke, history of early childhood events, and history of tuberculosis; to examine relationships between indicators of lung health and risk factors.

Project Description: With the input of the community, this research has been designed to examine lung health, specifically to document respiratory diseases and investigate risk factors associated with them. Interviews with all participants, lung tests (8 years of age and up), x-rays (18 years of age and up) will be conducted. Information is to be used to develop community-based programs to improve lung health. Residents will be trained for data collection.
