Objective(s): To gather Inuit traditional knowledge on the distribution, abundance and biology of the High Arctic beluga and narwhal from the communities of Arctic Bay, Grise Fiord, Igloolik and Hall Beach; to make this information available in an appropriate format to resource management agencies and resource users; to identify research needs and objectives for local and regional co-management plans; to aquaint resource users with the co-management structures currently in place, particularly the International Joint Commission.
Project Description: The researchers will be documenting Inuit traditional knowledge of the distribution, abundance and biology of High Arctic beluga and narwhal. This information will be used to identify research and management needs for local and co-management plans. A questionnaire will be used to interview elders and hunters; the interviewer will be a community resident. Information will be compiled into a report and a non-technical poster.
