Objectif(s): To collect fossil specimens of vertebrates and associated specimens from a Pliocene (approximately 4 million year old) beaver pond site on west-central Ellesmere Island; previous discoveries have included an adult beaver skeletion, several smaller beaver jaws, a rabbit tooth, bones and a tooth of a bear-like animal, a partial skeleton of a small fish and a rodent bone.
Description du projet: The researchers will return to an ancient beaver pond site on Ellesmere Island in order to collect vertebrate fossils. This research will contribute to our knowledge of an ancient boreal forest that existed approximately 4 million years ago. It may also shed new light on the evolution and distribution of vertebrates (e.g., beaver, rabbit, bear, fish, deer) as fossils have been found at this site that may belong to such animals or related species.
