Objective(s): To develop a better understanding of ground ice occurrence in high arctic environments; to employ raised marine sediments in the paleoclimatic interpretation of glacial and relative sea level events in the high arctic. Project objectives include: (1) documenting the distribution, range and nature of ground ice occurrence; (2) estimating the origin and age of massive ground ice; (3) assessing the potential geomorphic impacts of climate warming in areas of massive ground ice; (4) documenting the paleoclimatic conditions that influenced ice extent in the early Holocene; and (5) providing information about paleoecology and the paleoenvironment.

Project Description: This study will provide a better understanding of permafrost conditions in the high arctic as well as the environmental conditions that lead to permafrost formation. Study sites include the Fosheim Peninsula on Ellesmere Island and May Point and Mokka Fiord on eastern Axel Heiberg Island.
