Objective(s): To document and map Gwichya Gwich'in place names and cultural heritage resources along the Arctic Red River and south of the Mackenzie River (in the Tree River area); to investigate previous place name research in the Gwich'in Settlement Area in Inuvik, Fort McPherson and Aklavik.
Project Description: The proposed research project will involve a one-week trip up the Arctic Red River. Two Elders along with the researcher team will travel by boat up the river with two river guides. Elders will assist in the location and interpretation of traditional sites, place names and other significant features. A one-week visit will also be made to Fort McPherson and Aklavik by the researchers in order to assess previous place name studies done in these communities.
