Objective(s): To analyze and record the present levels of contaminants in various wildlife food sources harvested in the Inuvialuit Settlement Region (ISR), including charr, whitefish, seals and belugas; to establish an archival collection of samples for future analyses and temporal comparison of contaminant loading in the mentioned species. Analyses for 1993 include assessment of heavy metals, organochlorines and PCB's.

Project Description: This project was initiated following the concern voiced by the six ISR communities about the presence and levels of contaminants in the major country food sources. Samples of body tissues will be taken from charr, whitefish, seals and belugas in order to assess for heavy metal, organochlorine and PCB contaminants. These samples will be taken while other field research is being conducted by Fisheries and Oceans as well as the Fisheries Joint Management Committee.
