Objective(s): To study the physical and chemical properties of massive ground ice and to assess: (i) the stability of massive ice bodies using ground penetrating radar; (ii) paleoclimatic information trapped within the ice; and (iii) the sources of the ice and formation of the bodies.
Project Description: I plan to examine the characteristics of different types of ground ice. As the glaciers on Bylot Island retreat, thick layers of ice are buried beneath the ground. I wish to examine how this ice changes in its physical and chemical makeup when it becomes buried. Information on climate change will also be extracted from the ice.
