Objective(s): To develop a better method for determining evaporation rates from surface waters under northern climatic conditions, based on naturally occurring variations in the ratios of stable isotopes of oxygen and hydrogen. The results of this research will be applied to the problem of managing waste/contaminated waters from mining activities in order to minimize environmental disruption.

Project Description: The proposed research is part of an ongoing program of hydrological studies in the north aimed at improving our understanding of how water cycles through natural drainage systems. This year, I will examine water evaporation on lakes and ponds that are located on mine sites: results from this research will aid in the design of better tailings impoundments containing mine wastes/contaminants.
