Objective(s): To study how marine algae and bacteria interact in high latitude and cold ocean environments. The information from this study will be used to evaluate the importance of algae and bacteria in marine food webs. Geographic comparisons of food webs can then be made made between this study and other studies that took place in waters around Newfoundland and Antarctica.
Project Description: The proposed research will examine the importance of marine algae and bacteria in the polar food web. This research is similar to previous studies I have conducted which examined food webs in the Atlantic Ocean (off of the coast of Newfoundland) and Antarctica. In Resolute, I will measure the production and growth of natural populations of algae and bacteria under different light, temperature and nutrient conditions.
