Objective(s): To establish a Community Advisory Committee who will select local researchers; to record the origins of Dogrib rules and laws; to record accurate and complete information on traditional government processes, which include selection of the yabahti, the kawo and the kw'ati; to record how decisions were made and how they were enforced, and how social control was maintained.
Project Description: The community of Rae Lakes requested that a traditional governing systems project be conducted by themselves with the assistance of the Dene Cultural Institute and the Arctic Institute of North America. The scope of the research will be limited to documenting traditional governing systems prior to the 1921 Treaty. A Community Advisory Committee will direct the project and elders will be interviewed by staff trained by the Project Director and Consultant.
