Objective(s): Goals are to: identify, photograph, collect, preserve and catalogue all plant and animal parts used for healing; document their preparation and form for use; interview elders about their uses and to obtain the context of theories of health and illness which dictate their use, including any spiritual factors; verify findings in the Dogrib region; consult with community people about the applications of this knowledge in the education and health delivery systems; disseminate the executive summary in the 8 NWT Official Languages and distribute the report in Denendeh to interested health professionals and others interested in traditional knowledge.
Project Description: No baseline information has been systematically collected for the Dene about traditional use of plants and animal parts used for healing. There are still several Dogrib elders who hold and use this information and the Dene are eager to have this knowledge documented so so that they can teach it to young people.
