Objective(s): To tag and recover fish in order to determine stock contribution, fish growth, fish movement (distribution), fish survival and population numbers; to train local natives in methods and techniques of tagging fish so that they will be able to conduct future tagging programs; to assess the otolith/fin ray method to determine broad whitefish ages; to collect a small sample of fish for genetic studies; to collect information on associated fish species;
Project Description: The researchers will assess the feasibility of tagging large numbers of broad whitefish in the Mackenzie River Delta. Various fishing gear will be tested to evaluate effectiveness for capture and release of fish. The tagging program may be used to train local natives in tagging methods and techniques. Recovery of tagged fish and/or tags will be effected through active recovery from Inuvialuit fisheries, other fisheries in the area and other DFO projects.
