Objective(s): To better understand the spatial variation of substances introduced into the Canadian Arctic by human activity; to investigate smaller variations of substances in tundra and marine ecosystems which locally influence large-scale patterns of distribution; to provide background knowledge for the characterization of significant local human inputs; to aid decision-makers in identifying when and where remedial measures can be most efficiently applied;

Project Description: The research team will collect bottom-dwelling marine organisms and sediment to examine how materials introduced locally and from distant sources distribute themselves in the marine environment, to understand the potential for adverse effects and the likely persistence of such materials in the future. As well, they will collect soil and plant samples to understand the potential for impact and persistence in a typical tundra environment.
