Objective(s): To determine which species of vascular plants reach and survive in the extreme conditions of polar deserts; to establish permanent plots in tundra of the newly built snow fence zone.
Project Description: The researcher and his team will learn how plants returned to the arctic realm after the retreat of the continental ice sheet some 8000 years ago, and what the prospect is for the present polar deserts to become green again if the climate ameliorates, as predicted. As well, they will investigate the effects of climate warming on tundra plant communities in the Mid-arctic, through the simulation of higher snow accumulation using a snow fence.
