Objective(s): To establish whether a difference in age-specific fecundity (number of eggs per female) exists between the Big Fish and Babbage River populations; to establish whether energy reserves of spawning females are similar between the two populations both prior to spawning/overwintering (fall) and after overwintering (spring); to add information as to whether spawning adult fish leave the river and enter the sea the summer before spawning; to gain knowledge of energy partitioning to growth and reproduction to yield insight into the duration of the spawning interval for these char;
Project Description: This project addresses questions pertaining to the energy composition and habitat utilization of female sea-run Dolly Varden char (Salvelinus malma) of the Yukon Slope. The direct consequences of energy partitioning to fucundity (spawning success) and stored energy reserves (overwintering success) have significant effects on population abundance.
